Chapter Thirteen

Armand

"S-sir, you're scaring away our customers. Excuse me, sir. M-maybe you can pace back and forth in front of the florists? Or the shoe store?"

I turned to stare at the small human male speaking to me. His name was pinned to his chest. "Manny". Short and slender, he was trembling slightly as he leaned his head out of the café using the door to shield the rest of him.

"I-it's just that it's time for our lunch rush and people are scared to come in because you're pacing out here and making that…sound."

Sound? The growl I was emitting was involuntary. I was frantic. Angel and Mia and I had been meeting for lunch every Tuesday and Friday at noon for the last three weeks. Tuesday's, we met at Beau's Diner for po'boys and Friday it was Cayenne Café. It was twenty minutes past noon on Friday and no Angel.

Just as I was about to turn to the little man and bite his ugly head from his scrawny neck, Angel rounded the corner pushing Mia in the stroller. Thank the stars! I reached her side in three strides and gathered her into my arms.

"Ahh! Ouch, Armand, you're squeezing me!"

I loosened my grip, but I could not release her yet. "Where were you? I was afraid something had happened to you! I was beside myself! If anything happened… I would never forgive—"

"You're also shouting and making a scene." She wriggled loose from my grasp. "Can we talk about this inside?" Angel's cheeks were flushed and she looked around at the heads that were turned in our direction.

I did not care that onlookers gawked. Let them stare. If they had no business of their own to mind, they were sorry and pitiful and their opinions mattered very little to me anyway. I did not care what they thought or how they felt. But, I did care how Angel felt. So, I quieted and ushered her and Mia inside the café.

As Angel lifted a squirming, cooing Mia from the stroller, I folded the apparatus and stored it in the corner of the establishment and we were seated at our regular corner table.

"Can I get y'all something to drink?" A waiter stopped beside Angel and smiled at us. There was nothing in the man's eyes that said he was thinking about Angel in any way but friendly, yet I found myself wanting to snap him in half.

"A sweet tea, please. And then I'll have the special." Angel looked at me with her beautiful hazel eyes.

"Same for me."

As soon as he was gone, Angel leaned in closer. "I'm going to run to the ladies' room. Keep an eye on Mia for me."

As I nodded, she placed the tiny, squirmy youngling in my arms and as I smiled down at her, my heart melted as it usually did. She waved her tiny arms and blew saliva bubbles.

I laughed. "Good girl. Very impressive."

Where have you been brother? I've been looking all over for you. Ovide's thoughts invaded my head.
